Honoring Joel Hasken - Feb 12, 2010
A 12 year old boy who was born with Autism was honored this morning by USPS Mail Carriers, the Elgin Fire and Police Departments as well as family and friends. Joel Haskin had a love for the postal service since an early age. He was also a very frequent visitor at Elgin Fire's Station 1 since his home's back yard, butted up against the back of Station 1.
The Postal Service was on a couple of occasions, planning to make Joel an Honorary Mail Carrier but because an inoperable brain tumor had deteriorated his condition rapidly, had to reschedule, finally deciding to bring the ceremony to Joel this morning as over a dozen mail vehicles delivered either a card or message, recorded on video for Joel, as they drove past his home on Enterprise.
Joel was even presented with a custom mail satchel. Unfortunately Joel was unable to come outside for the ceremony which took about a half hour this morning, but watched from a window inside his him. Update Saturday: Joel lost his battle with cancer late yesterday evening. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.
