Leyden Township FPD MABAS Div. 20 3-Alarm - paper/plastics recycling plant - Feb. 4, 2010
This fire was in a recyclable "bundle" in the middle of a 100 x 500 commercial building. Fire personnel were responding to an alarm set off in the building. No one called 911 on this one! A sprinkler system kept this fire pretty much in check according to Franklin Park Fire Chief Dave Traiforos in a Franklin Park Herald interview, "It probably kept the building from burning down" Traiforos said.
Once under control, they had to bring in end-loaders to move the bales (that were 12' tall") to an open area where they could be broken apart and hosed down good. Chicago Fire Department's Mobile Ventilation Unit was used to clear the building for the firefighters once the fire was out so they could bring in the heavy equipment to move the bales. Over 18 departments responded to this fire and investigators were still on the scene. The video isn't real exciting stuff. More just shows the guys doing their thing. The Chicago Fire Department's MVU was pretty cool though! First time I'd seen them use it.
