Chicago Fire Department HazMat - Palmer and California Aug. 26, 2010
Coming back from checking out the Tall Ships at Navy Pier, CFD had a HazMat that wasn't too far away, so I went to check it out. Little did I know I'd be stuck there for about 3 hours. ;-)
Someone left 2 suitcases with a hat hanging on them, in the driveway area of a Chicago Police Station. Bomb Squad determined it was not an explosive device, but someone had claimed there to be chemicals in the cases. Before too long, someone was led off in handcuffs, and I discovered later that this was the person who belonged to the cases, and he claimed to purposely having left them there, loaded with some sort of chemicals.
Someone was saying that they were chemicals used in making counterfeit money.
After a few hours, the CPD HazMat crew uneventfully opened the cases and placed them into a containment drum and sealed it closed.
No one was injured, but boy was there people pissed off because they had the street closed. It was right next to an El station and as if it were their fault, CPD officers got screamed at by more than one person for being shoo'd away from the scene.
