Elgin State Bank Robbery (2nd one in a month) Jan. 18, 2012
At about 4:45 last night, EPD got a call that the Elgin State Bank on McLean had just been robbed. Details of the getaway car were pretty good, right down to the plate number. Police quickly picked up on this vehicle and followed it as we went through Eagle Heights, and then Valley Creek, doubling back again and then back south towards the bank they just robbed! Bad mistake on their part, virtually every cop in town was on their way to meet them and that they did, just after they turned back onto McLean. Once the vehicle was curbed by police, all three occupants bolted westbound between the houses on Scott Dr. (south of Royal) whose yards back up to McLean right there. Police quickly chased down 2 out of 3 of the robbers but one gave em the slip, running through yards and then back-tracking.
Police K9 units were able to get a track on the suspect and followed that track into the Walgreens where video showed details of the suspect, and then ran eastbound on the UP tracks next to Northwest Liquors. Elgin PD called for assistance by a helicopter from the AIR-ONE Emergency Response Coalition (formerly named the Law Enforcement Aviation Coalition) and began searching the area where the suspect was tracked, using their FLIR (Foward Looking Infra-Red) camera, but were unable to locate him. They knew who they were looking for though (by name) so it was just a matter of time until they located him, which they did in Batavia this morning and now all three suspects are in custody.
Elgin Police also utilized their "Reverse 911" system in which they can call all registered residents in a particular area and alert them of events such as this, where they were searching yards and wooded areas. Residents were told to be on the watch for anything suspicious and gave a brief description of the suspect and asked to call police if he or anything suspicious, were seen. At almost the same time, The Check into Cash store on Rt. 72 in East Dundee, was also robbed so when Elgin contacted QuadCom for assistance with their search, they were unable to come as they too, were looking for suspects.
Last month (December 21), the other branch of the Elgin State Bank on Randall Rd. was robbed, and the suspect got away, only to be apprehended a few days later. (click here for pics and video of last month's incident)
