Eagles perform in Carpentersville - Dec. 22, 2010
Not the rock band.... ;-) While driving by the Fox River this afternoon I was strafed by a Bald Eagle as it took a close look in the river for a late lunch. After parking for a bit, another one (presumably his mate) joined him in the trees and then within 5 minutes, along came 8 babies who also perched in the same trees as them. Obviously out for their afternoon flying lessons, the babies took off and flew around while mom and dad watched over them. It was amazing to see the other birds in the area, clear out when they came. When I put the camera down for a about 3 seconds, both of them dove towards the river and made a pass in front of my car, quickly turning around and plucking a fish out of the water. Just as fast as one grabbed it out of the water, the other came in and took it out of it's talons and then flew back towards the area where their nest is believed to be.
In a day otherwise filled with tragic events, I think I'm glad I was where I was today, although we'll never forget the Chicago Firefighters who gave their lives today. Maybe it brings a little more appreciation for the things around you.
